EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Required: Position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare or a related field. Position requires at least five years of experience in risk management administration in a health care facility or related field. Requires a working knowledge of Microsoft applications including Word and Power Point and database utilization skills. Also requires excellent management, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently. Preferred: A Juris Doctorate (JD) is preferred. At least six years of progressively responsible experience in a managerial position. LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR REGISTRATION: Required: None Preferred: Admission to a state Bar or current nursing license; and an Associate in Risk Management designation or Certified Professional Healthcare Risk Management designation. TRAITS & SKILLS: Must: 1) be self-directed and self-motivated; 2) maximize the use of UAHSF resources; 3) work cooperatively to achieve the mission and vision of the department and UAHSF; 4) maintain strict confidentiality of patient and all other sensitive information relative to the operations of the department; 5) exhibit flexibility and willingness to accept change and work in a team environment; 6) demonstrate the ability to handle multiple priorities in stressful situations; 7) demonstrate ability to interface with patients, families, staff and physicians in difficult and stressful situations; 8) adhere to all established department and institutional policies and procedures; 9) participate in continuing risk management education regularly.

Job Description:

The Director of Risk Management reports to the General Counsel for the Health Services Foundation, PC, the physician practice plan for Hospital Medicine, and is responsible for performing the duties of a Clinical Risk Manager and directing the activities of the clinical risk management staff. The risk managers investigate serious incidents which could give rise to liability, assess exposure and recommend corrective action or a course of action to reduce exposure to loss and manage the claims and litigation that arise out of the activities of the clinical enterprise. This claim/litigation management includes interfacing with physicians, patients, patient families, faculty, staff, and attorneys in investigations, depositions, hearings and negotiations. In addition, risk managers (including the Director) respond to inquiries and request for information from faculty, staff and external parties and they work collaboratively with the offices of Quality and Patient Safety to ensure the well-being of our patients and our clinical enterprise. The Director also develops and presents educational programs to physicians and other faculty and staff.
